...I have a sister with severe dyslexia, and I have helped her gain a more tactile understanding of mathematics by tutoring her over the summer. I also helped her to develop some organizational tools which have helped her to stay on top of her assignments and take charge of her own learning. I also have a brother who has moderate autism. ...I harbor this same approach in my teaching. During problem-solving sessions with a group of Biology students, I always made sure to call on each student to answer and explain their answer to certain questions, even when they didn't think their answer was correct.
