...While a calculator is allowed on the GRE, it is a very basic one. For the GMAT, a calculator is allowed on the 'Integrated Reasoning' Section, but not the 'Quantitative' Section. So, while preparing for either test, you will want to practice mental and written calculations, and shortcuts for both. (read more)
...However, Pre Algebra is a great starting point to get the basic idea of dropping numeric values and placing in letters instead.
