...As I wrapped up my PhD, I began directing the Writing Center at Simpson College, which was a dream come true. I taught over a dozen tutors how to implement my consulting techniques, and my methods won several awards for our services, including two grants (one internal and one NSF) for STEM-related writing support. ...I served as department chair of Communication at Grand View for three years before moving to an adjunct teaching role and re-entering the professional communication field. With more than 400 students reviewing me over that 10-year period, I received an average teacher rating of 4.7 out of 5, a number that placed me in the top 5% of professors. ...I have worked with students one-on-one, in classroom settings, in virtual/hybrid modes, and in asynchronous classrooms. I am currently the department head at the college I've worked for since 2012. My favorite way to teach is to outline a clear plan, deliver a balance of instruction and practice, leave room for questions, and check for understanding and future goal outlining. (read more)
...It is my job as a teacher to figure out how each student learns best. I believe in making my lessons engaging for students by tailoring the lessons to each students' interest. I also make the lessons hands on and incorporate lots of learning games. (read more)
