...My work as a volunteer brought me to a whole different age range of students. Write Stuff is a writing initiative with which we bring students from surrounding middle and elementary schools to campus and set them up with mentors who guide them through writing prompts. My own mentee, Tommy, will be returning for a third semester after having a poem we had work-shopped, published in a paper. (read more)
...I worked for many years as a literacy tutor, and know how to teach the fundamentals beginning and intermediate readers need to know. I believe in the phonics method, rather that "whole language" or similar strategies. Students need to be able to recognize patterns and the building blocks of words and sentences, and this is what I teach. (read more)
