...I could read an article aloud without a single mistake or stutter to an audience, but I wouldn’t be able to discuss what I had just read because I wasn’t actually retaining the information. How could the one subject I always excelled in actually be the one I was truly failing all along? Recognizing my problem during freshmen year helped me soar across the stage my senior year. I've been teaching children to read and improve their writing for over 20 years, starting as a volunteer in my son's kindergarten class. I enjoyed helping children so much in this way that I went on to study literacy and language acquisition for my Master's work. Now I tutor reading, writing, and language arts after retiring from teaching in a small, private school. (read more)
