One day, a student came to my tutoring session, and I was going over graphing sine and cosine. ...I've found that there is more of a "picture" of mathematics that develops from recognizing patterns rather than following "mechanical algorithms". Sure, ultimately you teach an algorithm at first for familiarization, but it really becomes effortless in application as a picture/shape. My minor was in math in physics as an undergrad at Arizona.
