...One way that I find useful in many situations is to have the student construct a step-by-step plan with me. First, we solve an example problem, and I thoroughly explain each step and my reasons for doing so. Once we've reached an answer, I ask the student to explain what I did and why, and their response serves as a written template for any future difficulties. (read more)
