...I found that having the student read short essays and answer questions helped tremendously and of course, going over vocabulary in which he had problems was beneficial. This helped me to know where his strengths and weaknesses were in order to improve on them. In the past, I had a 14-year-old student that was having trouble with his reading and comprehension.
